Multiple People Struck By Rental Van In Toronto

Toronto police said they arrested the driver of a white rental van who plowed through pedestrians hitting multiple people.

Authorities said that nine people were killed and 16 more were injured when the white van drove onto the sidewalk and started mowing down pedestrians.

Video footage from the scene shows bodies on the sidewalks covered in white sheets, and witnesses have reported that first responders have pronounced people dead at the scene.

Alex Shaker who witnessed the incident said the van was speeding before it jumped the curb and plowed through a crowd of people, including a person pushing a stroller.

“He started going down on the sidewalk and crumbling down people one by one,” Shaker told CTV News Channel.

Video footage captured a dramatic showdown between police and the suspect.

Video shared with CTV News shows the suspect pointing a small, dark object at police, with his back to the van. Police can be seen taking cover behind their vehicle and shouting at him to get down.

“Get down!” the officer is heard shouting.

“I have a gun in my pocket,” the suspect can be heard saying.

“Get down or you’ll be shot!” the officer says.

A few seconds later, the suspect dropped his weapon and was handcuffed by police.
